Earthquakes remain a serious threat to the San Francisco Bay Area. However, we can reduce the impact of an earthquake with proper preparation. There is no shortage of information on how to prepare, but often a shortage of action. Taking action now can relieve anxiety beforehand and in the event of an earthquake help us thrive in its aftermath. Preparation involves accumulating both information and supplies. Each of us should understand what to do before, during and after an earthquake whether at home, work, church or in our car. We have prepared three documents you can review. The first, “How to Prepare for an Earthquake,” the Second, “What to do During an Earthquake” and finally, “What to do After an Earthquake” can be downloaded by clicking on each of the article titles below.
A small action like packing a backpack and putting it in the trunk of your car can provide huge dividends if we find ourselves away from home or work and need to be self sufficient for several days. We want to encourage each of you to be wise and prepare. Our preparation can be another source of making a difference in our neighborhoods, workplace or where ever we go.
In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, … Proverbs 21:20
Home: Your disaster supplies kit should contain essential food, water, and supplies for at least three days. Keep this kit in a designated place and have it ready in case you have to leave your home quickly. Make sure all family members know where the kit is kept. Additionally, you may want to consider having supplies for sheltering for up to two weeks
Work: This kit should be in one container, and ready to "grab and go" in case you are evacuated from your workplace. A Backpack is the smart way to go. Make sure you have food and water in the kit. Also, be sure to have comfortable walking shoes at your workplace in case an evacuation requires walking long distances
Vehicle: In case you are stranded, keep a kit of emergency supplies in your car. This kit should contain food, water, first aid supplies, flares, jumper cables, and seasonal supplies.
Accumulating little by little can have a great impact over a short period of time. When your at the grocery store, just pick up a couple extra canned goods, a gallon of water and store them in a convenient place like the garage, a closet or that backpack in the trunk of your car.
